Sizing your safety vest

High visibility safety vests: What’s your size?

As you know, high visibility safety vests and coats are worn over regular clothing to protect workers in hazardous conditions. Proper fit is not only vital to the safety of the worker, it’s also essential for comfort. A worker should never feel constrained by the apparel required on the job. Rather, they should be able to move freely and comfortably in order to perform work tasks with ease.

Determining chest size will ensure a proper fit. Using a measuring tape (preferably a flexible plastic or cloth style), ask someone to help you with the following:

  1. Stand up straight with your arms hanging by your sides
  2. Have a helper wrap the tape measure around your back (across your shoulder blades), under your armpits and around to the largest part of your chest (tape measure should be snug, but not tight, with the end of the tape meeting at center of your chest)
  3. Using the end of the tape measure, locate the measurement on the tape in the center of your chest. Be sure the tape is not tight, and you’re breathing normally
  4. Now, add three inches to your chest measurement and use the sizing chart below to determine your size for a safety vest or coat (the extra inches will allow room for a variety of seasonal clothing to be worn underneath)
